What Organic Really Means

Indeed organic produce including organic dairy seemingly earn all the plaudits nowadays. They are increasingly becoming popular and equally revered, albeit somewhat costly to buy, with many food stores simply having to put up the tag “Organic” if they are to attract more buyers. I know you have been tempted to join the movement at your local food store, pick up a few “organic” and head home. But whether it is organic meat or poultry, nothing matters as far as the real definition is concerned.

But, what do organic or natural foods really mean?

The phrase “organic food” wholly refers to the process in which the current and ‘special’ agricultural products are grown, processed and packaged before they reach their final consumers. There are organic plants and organic dairy products including meat, milk, eggs, cheese and other foods from animals. And, while it is true about the varied regulations on how they are grown and processed, one rule in the US is apparently clear.

Across the US, all organic foods must grow without the use of synthetic pesticides. Moreover, the seeds that give rise to the organic foods should not be from any bioengineered genes or the commonly known GMOs. And as far as the fertilizers are concerned, the same organic produce must thrive in a place containing zero sewage sludge-based fertilizers.

So, all organic foods should have grown naturally, and, of course, under natural compost manure. Organic fertilizers are nutrient-rich and supply the plant with all it needs to grow. You will find that all organically grown food come with an ‘earthy’ taste and aroma. They also tend to develop faster and exhibit better disease and pest-fighting qualities.

Along with the use of natural fertilizer, all organic plants are monitored using natural and chemical-free pesticides. Weeds are eliminated using a plethora of safe and natural routes including mulching, crop rotation and the use of particular pests that eliminate the harmful ones. Through all these natural means, no chemical gets into the farm, and this inevitably means that the plant grows without any chemicals making up its compound.

Livestock kept for organic foods aren’t offered any chemicals – whether they are supplements or drugs. They are GMO-free too and aren’t injected with any hormones to grow better, like the conventional breeds of animals. Diseases are prevented naturally too so that no chemical is used in their monitoring whatsoever. The livestock is allowed to stay and wander in an open space.

Final Thoughts

It is important to mention that organic growing across the world today is a self-regulated industry, although governments still regulate various aspects of it. Growers in some countries might need to obtain a special government certification, and others don’t. However, all organic foods must be truly “organic” with a tag from a reputable regulatory authority.
